The Microcosmic Orbit

hui yin aka microcosmic orbit exercise

I first learned about this powerful practice, when I was getting certified in Reiki many (ahem, many) years ago. It has lots of benefits including powers of healing, increased energy + energetic balance, greater longevity, a deeper Spiritual connection, less stress, more flow + support for our overall well-being. It is also a good practice if you are a healer or work with people and need to clear + restore your energy on a regular basis, which is why my Reiki master shared it with me.

Additionally it connects us to the Cosmos. Because of this it is often referred to as small heavenly circles. It reminds us that we are a microcosm of a macrocosm, that all is connected, that we are made of stardust, and that every thing is ever changing and cycling.

In connecting you to the cosmos, it connects you to your Higher Self, to your truth, beneath all the societal conditioning. Therefore, this is a great practice to do when you are feeling lost and need to get back on your authentic path, when you need to connect to your own voice, outside of all the ‘noise’, when you are wanting to more deeply connect with your Soul’s purpose.

to practice

Find a safe, relaxed environment where you can be undisturbed. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Stack your heart over your pelvis and your head over your heart.

Concentrate on bringing your internal energy to gather at your Sacral, behind your navel. You can imagine a golden light filling this space and growing stronger. As you do this, notice how your breath naturally becomes more steady and slows down.

Once you feel you have sufficiently gathered energy at your Sacral, bring your awareness to your perineum (Hui Yin) and gather a pocket of energy there, then move your awareness to your coccyx, otherwise known as your root or tailbone and gather energy there.

Visualize this energy moving in whatever way feels resonant to you, maybe it’s a snake of light, a flow of cleansing pure ‘water’ or a golden pearl. Follow it as you slowly direct it, from your root, up the back of your spine to the Crown of your head.

Connect the two channels (the Governing Meridian and Conception Channel) by bringing the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth.

Bring the energy down the front of your face, front body and return to the navel to complete one cycle.

As you circulate the energy down from the navel, through the perineum and coccyx, breathe the energy up the back body, through the spine, (inhale) and down the front body (exhale). Feel into the energy moving through your body, pay attention to the sensations.

If your mind begins to wander, without judgement, bring your attention back to your breath.

After you have circulated the energy for some time and feel complete, breathe the energy all the way up the back of the legs and back body and then down the front body and fronts of the legs, under your feet, moving it through this circuit a few times.

To finish + contain the energy charged during the exercise:

Women: Rub the Sacral Center counter-clockwise 24 times and then clockwise 36 times.

Men: Rub the Sacral Center clockwise 36 times and then counter-clockwise 24 times.

Leave your hands on your lower abdomen for a couple of breaths, centering yourself there.

This meditation helps you to cultivate a calm, yet energized, state of being + will bring you into greater harmony and resonance with the Universe. You can set a timer and do a formal practice or just take a few breaths when you have time. Enjoy!
